Filters for your Aquarium – a single filter canister can handle a 40 gallon basic salt water aquarium.  If you will get a larger tank, it will save you more money.

Other relevant equipment such as heater, salt mix, thermometer, hydrometer and aragonite gravel are needed when setting up a saltwater aquarium.

Your Fish – this is fun.  Choosing your fish for your saltwater aquarium is a very rewarding experience.  You can choose the colours that you like and the sizes that you prefer.  A 40 gallon tank of water can keep at least four to five small fish.  It is best that you pick the species that will not cost you a lot like gobies, clown fish, basslets and other docile damsel fish.

There are common mistakes for beginners when they are setting up their own saltwater aquarium.  Some of which are as follows:

  1. Picking a fish without doing any research.  In picking a fish, make sure that you do research on their habitat and how will they cope with other fish.
  2. Do not overstock fish in your aquarium to avoid stress to the fish which can lead to fighting and eventually killing each other.
  3. Avoid getting smaller tanks for a more stable water environment.
  4. Do not overfeed the fish because it can lead to algae formation that may be harmful to the ecosystem.
